Am I Really Pregnant?

The thought of being unexpectedly pregnant can turn your world upside down. You may be feeling anxious, worried, frightened, or even excited. No matter how you feel, it’s a shock.

At Radiance Women’s Center, we want to help you answer the question, “Am I really pregnant?” Usually, the first sign of pregnancy is a missed period, but there are other symptoms to watch for.

When to Take a Pregnancy Test

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins producing a pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). After the fertilized egg implants in the uterus, the amount of hCG builds rapidly and eventually becomes detectable in her urine and bloodstream.

If a urine pregnancy test detects hCG, a woman is most likely pregnant. Healthcare providers recommend waiting at least a day after your missed period before taking a pregnancy test.

Taking a Home Pregnancy Test

Home pregnancy tests are reliable, but following the directions carefully is essential. To avoid getting a false-positive or false-negative result, follow these steps:

  • Check the expiration date first.
  • Read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the test.
  • Wait a day or two after your missed period before testing.
  • Take the test in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
  • Wait the recommended amount of time before checking the results.
  • Retake a test in 3 to 5 days.
